The Gift of Tight Boots

When I was 9 years old, my Dad got kicked out of the house. He headed overseas for a bit on and off, and one time when he returned when I was around 16 he gave me a pair of leather boots.
The boots were beautiful, but they had one issue—they were a bit too tight. At first, I tried to make them work, wearing them with thick socks and stomping around wet grass to stretch them. That was a mistake; the wetness marked the leather, and I lost the laces somewhere along the way.
Determined to fix them, I headed to town to find replacement laces and make the boots wearable again. What should have been a straightforward task turned into a frustrating journey. It took five shops before I finally found a pair of laces that 'kind of' fit. They were too thin for the sturdy boots, but I had no other choice.
I’ll never forget the frustration of trying to fix something I cared about. Only to be met with subpar solutions and a lack of care from the shops I visited. Those boots were more than footwear; they were a gift from Dad and their repair felt personal.
That experience taught me a lesson. People bring us their belongings not simply for functional repair. But because of the stories and emotions tied to them. When I opened my own repair shop years later, that memory became my guiding principle.
Looking back, those tight leather boots were more than a gift. They taught me the value of care, patience, and pride in one’s work. Today, I channel that lesson into everything we do at the shop. Ensuring that every repair is more than functional—it’s meaningful.
